Food Entrepreneurs – San Mateo County
If you plan to sell your product to clients (no resale), farmers market, or catering (except personal-chef cooking at your clients’ homes), you must obtain a permit from the San Mateo County Environmental Health Department. You also must use a licensed commercial kitchen to prepare, cook, and/or bake your product. You cannot use your kitchen at home.
If you plan to sell your product to a business, on the Internet (ecommerce), or wholesale, you must get either FDA or USDA approval, depending on your product.
First Steps
- Create the name of your company and secure a domain name.
- File for a Fictitious Business Name with the County of San Mateo County Clerk. For more information, visit the site.
- Apply for a business license from the city you live in.
- Contact the San Mateo County Environmental Health Department for a permit for catering or farmers market.
- Register and take a course for Food Safety Certification. For a fun one-day class with testing included, check out San Francisco Department of Public Health Food Safety Certification Class.
